Every academic department will integrate artificial intelligence into its curriculum by the 2027–28 academic year, making AI literacy a core learning outcome across all majors. Rather than limiting AI education to computer science or engineering, the university aims to ensure that students in disciplines ranging from the humanities and business to the arts and sciences graduate with the knowledge and skills to use AI responsibly within their professions. The initiative begins this year with 13 volunteer departments that will pilot AI integration before expanding across the entire university.
The university's approach emphasizes AI competency, not AI dependence. Faculty members are redesigning courses so students learn how AI applies to their specific fields while continuing to develop critical thinking, ethical judgment, and disciplinary expertise. Instead of simply teaching students how to use AI tools, the curriculum focuses on understanding AI's strengths, limitations, and appropriate professional use. Each department will determine how AI best fits its subject area, ensuring that integration is relevant rather than standardized across all programs.
The AI initiative is part of Miami University's broader Miami Integrated Learning Experience (MILE), a new general education framework approved by the university's Board of Trustees. MILE, which will replace the long-standing Miami Plan for students entering in Fall 2027, introduces applied professional skills alongside traditional academic requirements. AI literacy will become one of these cross-disciplinary competencies, reflecting the university's belief that graduates in virtually every profession will need to understand and work effectively with AI technologies.
University leaders view AI as a foundational skill comparable to digital literacy or data analysis. By embedding AI education throughout every major, Miami University aims to prepare graduates for workplaces where AI is increasingly integrated into research, decision-making, communication, and problem-solving.
