The rise of AI agents will fundamentally change the role of the personal computer. Today's PCs are primarily tools that humans operate directly, but agentic AI introduces a different model: users increasingly describe an objective while software agents handle multiple steps autonomously. Instead of opening applications, searching for information and moving between tools themselves, workers could increasingly delegate these workflows to AI.
This shift changes what people will expect from their computers. AI agents need more than raw processing power; they require hardware capable of running AI workloads efficiently, sufficient memory for large models and fast access to data. This is driving the growth of AI PCs and neural processing units (NPUs), which can handle certain AI tasks locally while reducing dependence on cloud services. Local processing can also improve responsiveness and privacy for some workloads.
The workplace implications could be significant. An employee might ask an agent to prepare a report, analyze a spreadsheet, summarize relevant documents, draft communications and update business applications rather than manually performing each step. That could make workers dramatically more productive, but it also changes the skills they need. People will increasingly have to specify goals clearly, supervise autonomous workflows, verify outputs and understand when an agent should—or should not—be given permission to act.
The article ultimately suggests that the PC itself is becoming an AI execution platform rather than simply a productivity terminal.
