AI and Quantum Technology to Power India’s Next-Generation Satellites

The National Space Technology Conclave 2026 highlighted how AI/ML, quantum technology and inter-satellite links could become key technologies in India’s next generation of satellite systems. Former ISRO SAC Director Dr. Nilesh M. Desai said AI-enabled onboard processing and edge computing could allow satellites to analyze data in space rather than sending everything to Earth first. That could enable faster decisions for applications such as governance, planning and disaster management.

A particularly important shift is moving intelligence closer to the satellite itself. Modern missions can generate enormous quantities of imagery and sensor data, making it inefficient to transmit all raw information to ground stations. AI onboard could identify relevant patterns or events and prioritize what needs to be transmitted. This could reduce latency and communications requirements while making satellites more responsive to time-sensitive situations. The same conclave also discussed AI-enabled mission operations and space-data processing.

The security dimension is equally significant. The experts discussed quantum technologies for securing sensitive communications and networks, alongside stronger navigation protections against spoofing—where false signals can mislead navigation receivers. India's Space-Based Surveillance programme was highlighted as another component of its national-security architecture. Inter-satellite links could further allow satellites to communicate directly, creating more resilient space-based networks rather than relying entirely on ground infrastructure.

Dr. Desai said India has developed radar capabilities across major frequency bands over the past decade through indigenisation and industry participation, while other experts emphasized the growing challenge of space debris and the need for continuous monitoring, collision avoidance and international cooperation.
