The UK economy is beginning to show measurable benefits from the global AI boom, according to Reuters. Official data showed that Britain's GDP grew 0.4% in the second quarter of 2026, with the information and communications sector responsible for almost half of that expansion. Within the sector, computer programming, consultancy and related activities—industries that include many AI businesses—grew 3.7% quarter-on-quarter, following a 3.8% increase in the previous quarter.
Investment is another major sign of AI's economic impact. UK spending on plant and machinery reached £22.1 billion in Q2, close to a record high. The Office for National Statistics said the latest increase reflected strong spending on ICT equipment, particularly computer hardware. Economists cited by Reuters believe that companies are increasing investment in computing capacity needed to develop and operate AI systems.
The AI boom is also benefiting British manufacturers. Output from UK manufacturers of computing, electronic and optical products increased 10.7% year-on-year in the second quarter, making it the fastest-growing of the country's 13 manufacturing subsectors. This suggests that AI's economic effect is extending beyond software companies into hardware, computing infrastructure and the broader technology supply chain.

Britain's experience suggests that building AI infrastructure can stimulate business investment, technology manufacturing and high-value services at the same time.
