Northrop Grumman has unveiled Raid Hunter, a new short-range air-defense system designed to counter mass aerial threats such as drone swarms and cruise missiles. The system combines a 50-mm Bushmaster chain gun with an AI-enabled command-and-control layer that can process sensor information from a wider air-defense network, identify multiple incoming threats, and coordinate the weapon's response.
The system's most notable feature is its precision-guided ammunition. Rather than relying entirely on conventional unguided rounds, Raid Hunter uses 50-mm projectiles with active control surfaces that can make course corrections during flight. The goal is to increase the probability of hitting small or maneuverable targets and make each round more effective against threats that could otherwise evade a conventional gun-based defense.
Raid Hunter is intended as a last layer of defense. Larger air-defense systems can engage threats at longer distances, but inexpensive drones can potentially overwhelm missile-based defenses through sheer numbers. A rapid-fire gun with a large ammunition supply offers a different economic and operational approach. Northrop Grumman says the system can fire up to 200 rounds per minute and is designed to provide high-capacity protection against complex, mixed aerial attacks.
The broader significance is the growing role of AI in shortening the air-defense decision cycle. AI is increasingly being used to process sensor information, classify threats and coordinate responses, while other counter-drone systems are exploring electromagnetic weapons and autonomous interceptors. Raid Hunter is currently undergoing accelerated testing, with deployment expected in the near future.
