AI Holograms Are Arriving at Airports

New York has introduced a life-size AI hologram concierge named “Bridget,” marking one of the most advanced uses of conversational AI in airport navigation. The holographic assistant can speak naturally with travelers, answer questions about gates, baggage claim, lounges, restaurants, and shops, and provide step-by-step directions using real-time terminal maps. The system was developed through a partnership between Proto and Holomedia’s AI Concierge Wayfinder platform.

Bridget currently communicates in English and Spanish, with more language support expected in the future. The hologram was also designed with accessibility in mind, including closed captioning, high-contrast displays, and wheelchair-accessible controls. Airport officials say the goal is not to replace human customer service workers, but to provide additional assistance during busy travel periods and improve passenger flow across the terminal.

The launch reflects a broader trend toward AI-powered airport experiences worldwide. Airports are increasingly experimenting with conversational assistants, biometric systems, chatbots, and immersive digital interfaces to reduce traveler stress and modernize navigation. According to reports, Miami International Airport recently launched similar holographic assistants capable of speaking dozens of languages and integrating with messaging platforms like WhatsApp, allowing passengers to continue conversations across devices.

Experts believe these systems represent a shift away from static signs and traditional information desks toward more personalized, always-available digital support. However, the rise of AI-driven airport infrastructure also raises questions about privacy, automation, and the balance between human interaction and machine assistance. While supporters see AI holograms as a practical solution for improving customer experience, critics warn that increasing reliance on biometric and AI systems could lead to concerns around surveillance, data collection, and passenger consent.
