AI investment is beginning to push up the prices consumers pay for technology, according to CBS News. The effect is particularly visible in smartphones, computers and other electronics because AI companies and data centers are competing for many of the same components—especially advanced processors, memory and storage. CBS reports that prices for information-technology commodities rose 1.4% in July from the previous month, considerably faster than the broader pace of price increases.
One major pressure point is computer memory and GPUs. AI data centers require enormous quantities of high-performance chips and storage, increasing demand and tightening supply for components that also go into consumer devices. Manufacturers facing higher input costs can pass those increases on to shoppers. At the same time, consumers themselves are increasingly paying for premium generative-AI services, with subscriptions to more capable AI tools commonly costing around $20–$30 per month.
AI's inflationary effect can also extend beyond electronics. The enormous electricity requirements of data centers are putting additional pressure on power infrastructure, potentially contributing to higher electricity costs for households. CBS has previously reported that utilities are expanding capacity to accommodate data-center demand, with ratepayers potentially absorbing some of those infrastructure costs. The AI boom can therefore affect consumers indirectly—even people who rarely use AI—through electricity prices and other technology-related costs.
The interesting economic question is whether this is short-term pain for long-term productivity gains. Economists cited by CBS expect strong AI investment to continue adding upward pressure to inflation over the next couple of years. Eventually, however, AI could increase productivity enough to reduce costs in other parts of the economy. For now, the story is more complicated: AI is simultaneously being promoted as a technology that will make everything cheaper and becoming a huge source of demand for scarce chips, computing capacity, energy and infrastructure.
