AI Is Turning Semiconductors Into a $1.6 Trillion Industry

AI is transforming the semiconductor industry into an enormous growth engine. Gartner has raised its 2026 forecast for global semiconductor revenue to about $1.6 trillion, representing roughly 92% growth from 2025. The upgrade reflects the accelerating deployment of AI systems, particularly as enterprises move beyond experimentation toward large-scale AI infrastructure.

Memory is emerging as one of the biggest beneficiaries. Larger AI clusters require huge quantities of high-performance memory alongside CPUs, accelerators, networking, power systems and optical interconnects. Gartner expects memory to account for more than half of semiconductor-industry growth in 2026, with memory revenue approaching $1.1 trillion by 2027, compared with about $837 billion in 2026.

The structural change is even more significant when looking at AI data centers' share of semiconductor demand. Gartner expects AI data-center revenue to represent more than 30% of the semiconductor market in 2026 and potentially 53% by 2030. That means semiconductor economics are increasingly being shaped by the requirements of AI factories: enormous compute density, high-bandwidth memory, networking, storage and power efficiency.

The broader takeaway is that AI's economic impact extends far beyond AI software companies. The boom is reshaping the entire hardware supply chain, creating extraordinary demand for memory, processors, networking equipment and data-center infrastructure. But it also creates bottlenecks and pricing pressure: when AI companies compete for limited semiconductor and memory capacity, the cost of building AI systems rises. In effect, the AI race is becoming a semiconductor race, and control over the hardware supply chain could be just as strategically important as having the best AI models.
