AI Must Be Treated as a Long-Term Operating Model Shift

At the ETCIO Annual Conclave 2026, Ratan Kumar, Executive Director of Central Bank of India, said artificial intelligence should not be viewed as a short-term technology experiment but as a multi-year transformation of how organizations operate. He argued that many companies fail with AI because they treat it as isolated pilot projects instead of embedding it into enterprise-wide workflows, governance systems, and decision-making structures. According to Kumar, AI adoption requires deep institutional change involving leadership, compliance, accountability, and operational redesign.

Kumar emphasized that orchestration is the next stage of enterprise AI adoption. Rather than simply automating repetitive tasks, organizations must integrate AI into the broader way they function, including data systems, business processes, customer interactions, and regulatory compliance. In banking, he said, the shift from traditional automation to AI-led decision-making requires stronger transparency, auditability, and trust mechanisms to ensure responsible deployment.

A major theme of the discussion was governance. Kumar argued that governance should not be seen as an obstacle slowing innovation, but as the foundation that allows AI systems to scale safely in highly regulated sectors such as finance. Banking leaders at the conclave stressed that explainability, risk management, and customer trust will become key competitive advantages as financial institutions expand AI use across fraud detection, customer engagement, and operational intelligence.

The conversation also reflected broader concerns about India’s evolving AI economy. Industry experts increasingly believe India’s success in artificial intelligence will depend less on building giant foundational models and more on application-led innovation, workforce readiness, infrastructure, and governance maturity. As enterprises move toward intelligence-driven operations, AI is being positioned not merely as a technology tool, but as a long-term shift reshaping organizational culture, business models, and the future of work itself.
