AI News Network Shuts Down After Plagiarism Scandal

An AI-powered local news network called Nota News has shut down after a major plagiarism controversy was uncovered. The issue came to light when Axios Richmond found that several stories published on Nota’s local news sites had copied content from other journalists and outlets without permission. What started as questions about one local site quickly grew into a much larger scandal involving multiple states.

According to reports, more than 70 examples of copied content were found, taken from at least 29 news outlets and 53 journalists. This included rewritten articles, direct reporting details, and even photographs used without credit. Nota had launched 11 AI-driven local news sites with the aim of filling “news deserts,” areas with limited local journalism, but instead it ended up misusing the work of real reporters.

The company’s CEO said the sites were initially meant as experimental projects and were not intended to be fully public-facing. However, after the plagiarism findings were confirmed by both Axios and Poynter, Nota first removed some articles and then shut down the entire network. The scandal has raised serious concerns about using AI in journalism without proper editorial oversight, fact-checking, and ethical standards.

Overall, this incident highlights the risks of relying too heavily on AI-generated journalism. While AI can help improve speed and workflow, the case shows that human supervision and ethical responsibility remain essential in news reporting. The shutdown of Nota News serves as a warning that technology should support journalism, not replace the core values of originality, attribution, and trust.
