Although the cost of using AI models continues to fall, enterprise AI spending is expected to keep rising. According to Fortune, businesses are discovering that lower prices per token do not automatically translate into lower overall AI costs. As organizations deploy AI more widely across departments, build autonomous AI agents, and automate increasingly complex workflows, total usage grows so quickly that overall spending continues to increase—even as the underlying technology becomes cheaper.
A major reason is the shift from simple chatbots to AI agents. Modern enterprise AI systems often perform multi-step tasks, repeatedly call language models, retrieve information from multiple sources, and coordinate with other software tools. While each individual AI request may cost less than before, an AI agent may generate hundreds or thousands of model calls to complete a single business process. Companies are therefore paying for far more AI interactions than they did during the early stages of generative AI adoption.
The article also highlights that AI costs are becoming harder to control. Many organizations now face expenses beyond model inference, including cloud infrastructure, data storage, security, monitoring, orchestration software, integration with enterprise systems, and governance.
