Collectors restore machines from companies such as Atari, Commodore, IBM, Apple, and Xerox, treating them not as obsolete electronics but as important pieces of computing history. For many enthusiasts, repairing these machines offers a deeper understanding of how computers work because their hardware and software can often be examined from beginning to end.
The hobby is also becoming increasingly popular. More than 3,500 people attended the 2026 Vintage Computer Festival in Mountain View, California, which celebrated Apple's 50th anniversary and included appearances by Apple co-founders Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Vintage computer festivals, repair workshops, swap meets, and collector communities have also expanded across North America, South America, and Europe. Rare systems such as the Apple-1 can now command hundreds of thousands of dollars, reflecting growing interest in early computing technology.
One particularly notable example is the Xerox Alto, a 1970s computer developed at Xerox PARC and often regarded as a precursor to the modern personal computer. It introduced concepts such as the mouse and graphical user interface, including windows, icons, and cursors, that later became fundamental to mainstream computing. Collector Josh Dersch spent years restoring an Alto and brought a working system to the festival, demonstrating how these machines can still provide a tangible connection to the origins of modern technology.
The renewed interest in vintage computers suggests that technological progress can create a stronger appreciation for its own history. While today's AI systems represent the cutting edge of computing, collectors are preserving the machines, ideas, and engineering breakthroughs that made the current era possible.
