Asia’s AI Laws Are Finally Here — And They Couldn’t Be More Different

Several Asian countries have recently introduced major laws to regulate artificial intelligence, but their approaches are very different. According to the article, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan each created their own legal frameworks between 2025 and 2026. While all of them aim to support innovation and manage risks, the laws vary widely in terms of strictness, enforcement, and regulatory focus.

Japan has taken the most light-touch and growth-oriented approach. Its law mainly promotes research, development, and the use of AI as a driver of economic growth. Rather than imposing heavy restrictions, Japan focuses on strategy, national planning, and cooperation with international standards. In contrast, South Korea’s law is more structured and enforceable, introducing clear rules for high-impact AI systems, disclosure requirements, and even financial penalties for non-compliance.

Vietnam has adopted one of the most detailed risk-based systems. Its law classifies AI into high-risk, medium-risk, and low-risk categories, with different compliance rules for each. High-risk systems must go through assessments, maintain technical documentation, and allow human oversight. Meanwhile, Taiwan has chosen a principle-based framework, focusing on ethics, privacy, transparency, fairness, and accountability, while leaving specific enforcement to future sector-based laws.

Overall, the article highlights that Asia is not moving toward a single AI legal model. Instead, each country is designing laws based on its own priorities—some emphasizing innovation, others focusing on safety and governance. This diversity shows that AI regulation is becoming a major policy issue across the region, but there is still no universal approach to managing the technology.
