AWS Is Turning AI Agents Into Marketplace Products

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is building a marketplace around AI agents, reflecting a shift from buying software applications to increasingly buying AI systems that can perform tasks. Instead of simply providing a tool that a human operates, these agents can potentially research information, interact with business systems and execute multi-step workflows on a company's behalf.

The significance is that an AI agent marketplace could become a new distribution layer for enterprise software. Companies would be able to discover specialized agents for functions such as customer service, security, finance, IT operations or data analysis, then connect those agents to the services and information they already use. This could make agent adoption considerably easier than having every organization build its own system from scratch.

AWS's role is particularly important because enterprises already use its cloud infrastructure and security controls. If agents can be distributed through an established cloud marketplace, businesses can potentially evaluate them alongside conventional software while applying existing identity, permissions, monitoring and governance mechanisms. That is critical because an agent with the ability to take actions inside a company's systems creates considerably more risk than a chatbot that only generates text.

The broader trend is the emergence of an “agent economy” alongside the traditional software economy. Instead of purchasing applications and having employees operate them, companies may increasingly purchase AI agents that operate across multiple applications and workflows. That could change how enterprise software is sold and consumed—but it also makes questions around permissions, accountability, data access and human oversight much more important. The competitive advantage may ultimately belong not just to the company with the best AI model, but to the platforms that make reliable, governable agents easy to discover and deploy.
