British Business Is Using AI to Survive, Not Grow

A recent City A.M. article highlights that British companies are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence, but largely as a defensive strategy rather than a growth driver. The report notes that UK business leaders rank cost efficiency among their top priorities, much higher than global peers, while innovation and research-driven growth rank noticeably lower. This suggests that many firms are turning to AI primarily to manage economic pressure and improve short-term resilience instead of creating new products, services, or markets.

The article draws on a study of 600 senior leaders across seven global markets and reveals that 88 per cent of UK leaders expect AI-led organisational change to accelerate in the coming year. However, rather than using this technological shift as an opportunity for expansion, British businesses are focusing on automation, operational efficiency, and workforce optimisation. This survival-first approach reflects broader economic uncertainty and concerns over productivity, inflation, and competitive pressure.

Another key concern raised is the effect on employees and workplace culture. Around 45 per cent of UK leaders identified job security as a major employee concern, almost double the level reported in some other countries. When AI adoption is framed mainly around efficiency and optimisation, employees often interpret it as a sign of possible redundancies or restructuring. The article argues that this creates anxiety and weakens trust, making transformation harder to implement successfully.

Overall, the piece suggests that while Britain is embracing AI rapidly, it risks falling behind countries that are using the technology more strategically for innovation, customer value creation, and long-term growth. The central message is that UK businesses must move beyond merely enduring change and instead use AI as a tool for leadership and expansion in the global economy.
