California's AI Transparency Act officially became operative on August 2, 2026, introducing one of the United States' most comprehensive AI content transparency laws. The legislation requires operators of publicly accessible generative AI systems with more than 1 million monthly California users to embed machine-readable provenance data in AI-generated images, videos, and audio, provide a free public detection tool, and allow users to apply visible AI labels to their content. While the initial obligations apply to covered AI providers, additional requirements will extend to large online platforms beginning in 2027, requiring them to detect and preserve AI provenance information. Later phases will also affect device manufacturers by enabling capture devices to embed provenance metadata at the point of content creation. Together with similar regulations in Europe, these measures signal a broader global shift toward mandatory AI transparency and content authentication as governments seek to build trust in generative AI technologies.
