Carnegie Mellon University is launching a national study of how artificial intelligence is being integrated into arts and design education. The initiative is being led by CMU’s College of Fine Arts and supported by a selective National Endowment for the Arts Research Lab Grant. Its goal is to understand how colleges and universities are responding to AI and provide evidence that can help institutions develop better policies and educational practices.
The project will examine both the opportunities and challenges created by generative AI in creative education. Researchers will look at how institutions are teaching AI literacy, how AI is changing creative practice, and what students need to learn to work with these systems effectively. The project will also develop national benchmarks that allow universities to compare their approaches rather than each institution having to develop an AI strategy independently.
A particularly important focus is the question of what it means to use AI creatively, skillfully and ethically. Rather than treating AI simply as another production tool, the initiative aims to examine how artists and designers should understand its implications for creative practice. CMU says the project will bring together creative practice, critical thinking, arts management and technology, with partners including Creative Generation, the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities and Penn State's Art and Design Research Incubator.
The larger significance is that arts education could help shape how society thinks about AI rather than merely adapting to it. As AI becomes capable of generating images, music, writing, video and other creative outputs, universities need to rethink what students should learn and what skills remain distinctly valuable. CMU's national benchmarking effort could provide a framework for institutions to move beyond isolated experiments and toward coordinated approaches to AI literacy, ethics and creative education.
