Centre Forms High-Level Inter-Ministerial Body to Steer AI Governance Strategy

The Government of India has established a high-level inter-ministerial body called the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG) to guide the country’s artificial intelligence governance strategy. Chaired by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the group will act as the central authority for coordinating AI-related policies across ministries, departments, and regulators. The move reflects a “whole-of-government” approach to managing AI development and deployment in India.

The AIGEG will function as the apex body within India’s AI governance framework, ensuring alignment between different sectors such as technology, economy, security, and policy. It will also be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC), which will provide expert advice on global AI trends, emerging risks, regulatory challenges, and innovation opportunities.

One of the key responsibilities of the group is to assess the impact of AI on the labour market and develop strategies to manage job transitions. It will work with industry stakeholders to create a long-term roadmap for AI deployment, including identifying which use cases are ready for immediate rollout, which need further testing, and which should be delayed.

Overall, the formation of AIGEG marks a significant step toward structured and responsible AI governance in India. The body will review existing regulations, address policy gaps, promote ethical AI innovation, and ensure that AI development aligns with economic growth, legal frameworks, and social stability in the coming years.
