China Is Powering New Data Centers With Clean Energy

China is taking a different approach to the AI infrastructure boom by pairing the rapid expansion of data centers with large-scale clean energy projects. According to Fast Company, many of the country's newest AI data centers are being built in regions rich in wind and solar resources, such as Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Ningxia. Instead of relying primarily on fossil fuels, these facilities are designed to draw electricity directly from nearby renewable energy sources, reducing emissions while supporting the growing demand for AI computing power.

A key part of China's strategy is locating data centers close to where renewable energy is generated rather than near major cities. This allows operators to take advantage of abundant clean electricity and transmit computing services digitally to users elsewhere. The government is also investing in ultra-high-voltage transmission lines and encouraging direct green power connections between renewable energy projects and industrial facilities, including AI data centers.

The article contrasts China's approach with that of the United States, where many new AI data centers are still being powered by natural gas because of concerns about grid reliability and the speed of deployment. While China continues to use coal in parts of its energy system, its coordinated investment in renewable generation, energy storage, and grid infrastructure is enabling a larger share of new AI computing capacity to operate on cleaner sources of electricity.

As global demand for AI accelerates, China's model highlights how clean energy and digital infrastructure can be developed together. Although challenges remain in balancing intermittent renewable power with continuous data center operations, the country's integrated planning could serve as a blueprint for reducing the environmental impact of AI while meeting the rapidly growing need for computing capacity.
