China's new rules on AI companion services are having an unexpectedly emotional impact on some users who had developed deep attachments to virtual friends and partners. For some users, the shutdown has felt like losing a genuine relationship. One 24-year-old user, Li Linlin, said she cried for days after losing her AI boyfriend, with whom she had exchanged roughly 700,000 words over two years. Other users have posted complaints, tried to transfer their conversation histories to alternative services, or organized online campaigns asking companies and authorities to reconsider the restrictions. The reactions demonstrate how emotionally significant AI companions can become when interactions are continuous and highly personalized.
The Chinese government says the restrictions are intended to address concerns about emotional manipulation, psychological dependence, and risks to children and teenagers. Platforms must warn users against excessive reliance on AI and cannot design services around replacing real-world social interaction. Experts cited by AP note that concerns about harmful interactions between young people and AI companions in the United States may have influenced China's decision to act preemptively.
At the same time, the regulations raise a difficult question about the role AI can play in people's emotional lives. For individuals who are isolated or lack strong social support, AI companions can provide conversation, encouragement, and a sense of connection. China's experience shows that as AI relationships become more convincing, governments may increasingly have to balance consumer freedom and technological innovation against psychological safety and social well-being. The debate is likely to become more important globally as AI companions become more sophisticated and widespread.
