People who score higher on certain "Dark Tetrad" personality traits—narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism—may be more likely to develop problematic patterns of generative AI use. Published in BMC Psychology, the research analyzed responses from 677 adult AI users and found that narcissism was the strongest and most consistent predictor of compulsive AI use, while sadism showed a smaller but statistically significant association. The findings do not imply that AI causes these traits, but rather that certain personality characteristics may influence how people engage with AI tools.
The researchers found that the relationship is explained through two psychological mechanisms. The first is vertical individualism—a tendency to seek status, competition, and personal superiority. The second is the fear of missing information, where individuals feel anxious about not knowing enough and turn to AI for constant reassurance or answers. Chatbots, which provide instant responses and rarely challenge users, may particularly appeal to people with these tendencies, potentially reinforcing excessive reliance on AI.
The study does not argue that AI is inherently harmful. Instead, it highlights that problematic AI use resembles other behavioral addictions, where excessive engagement begins to interfere with daily functioning. Experts note that overreliance on AI may also contribute to cognitive offloading—outsourcing thinking and decision-making to AI—which some research has linked to reduced critical thinking and independent problem-solving when used excessively.
The authors emphasize that these findings should be interpreted cautiously, as the research identifies associations rather than proving cause and effect. Most people use AI responsibly, and personality is only one of many factors influencing technology use. Nevertheless, the study underscores the importance of designing AI systems that encourage healthy engagement, promote critical thinking, and avoid reinforcing compulsive usage patterns as AI becomes more integrated into everyday life.
