DeepMind Founder Demis Hassabis Moves Into Alphabet's Top AI Science Role

Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google DeepMind, has been appointed Alphabet's Chief Scientist, marking one of the most significant leadership changes in Google's AI organization. According to Computerworld, Hassabis is stepping away from the day-to-day responsibilities of running Google DeepMind to concentrate on the company's long-term AI strategy, including artificial general intelligence (AGI), scientific discovery, and responsible AI development. He will also become Chair of Google DeepMind, while former CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over operational leadership of the AI lab.

The restructuring reflects Google's effort to sharpen its AI strategy as competition with OpenAI, Anthropic, and rapidly advancing Chinese AI companies intensifies. By moving Hassabis into a company-wide scientific leadership role, Alphabet aims to give one of the industry's leading AI researchers greater freedom to focus on breakthrough research rather than daily management. Kavukcuoglu, meanwhile, will oversee the execution and commercialization of Google's AI products, including the Gemini family of models, with a stronger emphasis on faster product delivery and enterprise adoption.

Several prominent researchers, including former Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean and other senior AI leaders, have recently left to launch a new AI startup, raising concerns about talent retention.
