Experienced Tech Professionals Are Seeing Stronger Demand Despite AI-Driven Layoffs

The tech job market is becoming increasingly polarized: companies are cutting roles while simultaneously increasing demand for experienced professionals with specialized expertise. According to Toptal’s Q2 2026 High-Skilled Job Report, demand for experienced technology and professional-services talent increased during the second quarter, even as layoffs remained elevated across the technology sector. The shift suggests that companies are becoming more selective about which workers they need rather than simply reducing technology headcount across the board.

A major factor is the combination of AI skills and domain expertise. Companies increasingly want professionals who understand both their industry and how to apply AI to real business problems. Rather than hiring purely for generic coding or technical abilities, employers are placing greater value on people who can redesign workflows, supervise AI systems, interpret results and connect technology decisions to business outcomes. This is particularly important as AI automates portions of routine technical work.

The trend creates a difficult situation for early-career workers. AI can perform many tasks that traditionally served as entry-level training—basic coding, testing, research, documentation and analysis. At the same time, companies increasingly want candidates who already possess years of experience and judgment. This creates a potential “experience gap”: organizations want senior-level AI-fluent talent, but fewer junior workers may get the opportunities needed to develop into those professionals. Recent research similarly warns that automating junior tasks can weaken the apprenticeship pipeline that produces future experts.

The broader message is that AI is not simply eliminating tech jobs; it is changing what employers consider valuable. Routine execution is becoming cheaper, while judgment, domain knowledge, AI fluency and the ability to solve ambiguous problems are becoming more valuable. For technology professionals, the strongest position may therefore come from combining deep expertise in one field with the ability to use AI to amplify that expertise. But for the industry as a whole, the challenge will be ensuring that today's entry-level workers still have a pathway to acquire the experience that tomorrow's AI-heavy economy will demand.
