Advances in generative AI now make it easy to create highly realistic clips of rare species or alter genuine footage, making it increasingly difficult for viewers to distinguish authentic wildlife behavior from fabricated content.
Scientists are particularly concerned about citizen science platforms, where members of the public upload wildlife observations that are later used by researchers to study biodiversity, species distribution, and the effects of climate change. Even subtle AI edits, such as removing obstacles or enhancing an animal's appearance, can unintentionally introduce false biological features or create misleading records that compromise valuable scientific datasets.
Experts note that while deliberate hoaxes remain relatively uncommon, the growing use of AI-powered editing tools is increasing the risk of accidental misinformation.
