Indian IT Firms See AI Demand Rise Even as Spending Slows

Indian IT services companies are witnessing a paradoxical trend: demand for artificial intelligence solutions is rising sharply, but overall client spending is slowing down. According to the Tech in Asia report, enterprises are increasingly prioritizing AI-led projects, yet they are simultaneously cutting or delaying broader IT budgets due to macroeconomic uncertainty and cautious decision-making.

This shift is reshaping revenue dynamics. While AI-related work is growing quickly, it still forms a relatively small portion of total earnings. Analysts estimate that AI could reduce legacy services revenue by 2–3% annually, as automation replaces traditional outsourcing tasks like maintenance and support. In effect, AI is both a growth driver and a disruptor—creating new opportunities while eroding older business models.

Another key issue is pricing pressure. As AI tools increase efficiency, clients expect more output for less cost, leading to margin compression for IT firms. At the same time, global economic conditions—especially in major markets like the U.S.—are causing companies to scale back discretionary tech spending. This has resulted in slower deal pipelines and muted near-term growth for large Indian IT players.

Despite these challenges, the long-term outlook remains optimistic. AI is becoming central to nearly every digital transformation project, and companies that build strong capabilities in areas like generative AI, automation, and data engineering are expected to gain a competitive edge. The current slowdown is seen as a transitional phase—where the industry shifts from traditional IT services to an AI-first operating model that will define future growth.
