Japan nevertheless has some significant advantages. Its aging population and shrinking workforce create a powerful economic incentive to automate tasks through AI and robotics. Japan also has deep expertise in manufacturing, robotics and physical systems, giving it an opportunity to pursue “physical AI” rather than competing directly with American companies on foundation models alone. Existing Japanese companies and startups are already exploring AI-powered robotics, industrial automation and specialized Japanese-language models, suggesting that Japan's eventual AI strength could emerge from the combination of software and its manufacturing ecosystem.
The article's broader message is that Japan does not necessarily need to win the frontier-model race to become an AI leader. Its opportunity may lie in deploying AI deeply throughout factories, logistics, healthcare, transportation and other industries where it already possesses strong domain expertise.
