Microsoft and French AI startup Mistral AI have expanded their strategic partnership to strengthen AI infrastructure across Europe, with a focus on regulated industries that require greater control over data and computing environments. The collaboration aims to provide enterprises with frontier AI models while allowing them to retain sovereignty over their data, operations, and critical workloads through flexible deployment options.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will invest billions of dollars in Mistral's European computing infrastructure, enabling Azure customers to access AI services hosted in Mistral's data centres in France. Mistral's latest models, including Medium 3.5 and OCR 4, will also be integrated into Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studio, and Azure Local, allowing organizations to deploy AI in cloud, on-premises, or even fully disconnected environments.
The partnership reflects Europe's growing emphasis on AI sovereignty, giving businesses and public-sector organizations an alternative that keeps AI processing and data within European infrastructure while meeting regional regulatory requirements. Mistral is also expanding its compute capacity across Europe with the goal of reaching 1 gigawatt of AI computing power by 2030, positioning itself as a leading European AI infrastructure provider.
For Microsoft, the expanded alliance strengthens its position in Europe's rapidly growing AI market while broadening its enterprise AI offerings beyond OpenAI models.
