Microsoft uses Anthropic and OpenAI together in major AI strategy shift

The Microsoft has significantly upgraded its Microsoft 365 Copilot Researcher tool by combining models from both OpenAI and Anthropic. Instead of relying on a single AI model, Microsoft is now moving toward a multi-model architecture, where different systems work together to improve the final response. This marks one of the clearest signs yet that the future of enterprise AI may not belong to just one model provider.

A key new feature is the “Critique” layer, where Anthropic’s Claude reviews and critiques responses first generated by OpenAI’s model before they are shown to users. This cross-checking system is designed to improve accuracy, reduce hallucinations, and catch mistakes that one model alone might miss. According to Microsoft, this approach improved research quality scores by 13.8% on the DRACO benchmark, showing measurable gains from model collaboration.

The article also highlights Microsoft’s broader strategic goal: reducing dependence on OpenAI. While OpenAI remains a major partner, Microsoft is clearly building flexibility into Copilot so it can switch between multiple external and in-house models. Executive VP Charles Lamanna noted that by summer 2026, many more models may be integrated into the system. This signals that enterprise customers increasingly want AI platforms that are model-agnostic and adaptable.

Overall, the piece suggests that AI development is entering an ensemble era, where multiple models specialize, critique, and compare outputs rather than one model doing everything. While this improves reliability, it also raises costs and may slow response speed. Still, Microsoft appears to believe that better accuracy and flexibility outweigh these trade-offs, making this a major shift in how AI tools are built and deployed.
