Saudi Arabia has officially declared 2026 as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence,” highlighting the country’s ambition to become a global leader in advanced technology. The initiative is part of the Kingdom’s broader digital transformation strategy under Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy beyond oil and build a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and data technologies.
Officials say the move reflects the progress Saudi Arabia has already made in AI development. The country ranked 14th in the 2025 Global AI Index and currently holds a leading position in the Arab world for developing AI models and infrastructure. These achievements are supported by large investments in data platforms, computing infrastructure, and research programs designed to expand AI capabilities across multiple sectors.
Investment in AI and emerging technologies in the Kingdom has been growing rapidly. Government spending on advanced technologies increased by more than 56% in 2024, while AI companies operating in the country secured around $9.1 billion in funding. Authorities believe this investment will help accelerate innovation, strengthen digital infrastructure, and attract global technology companies to Saudi Arabia.
The announcement also included a new logo symbolizing the initiative, designed to blend Saudi cultural heritage with technological progress. Officials say the program will encourage education, research, and entrepreneurship in artificial intelligence while promoting the Kingdom’s vision of a technology-driven future that supports economic growth and global competitiveness.
