AI competition: speed itself is becoming a product feature that companies can monetize. OpenAI and Google both released faster AI models during the week, with response time becoming a central part of their pitches. Rather than competing only on intelligence, reasoning quality or benchmark performance, AI providers are increasingly competing on how quickly users can get useful results.
This matters particularly for business applications and AI agents. When an AI system is used occasionally for brainstorming, a few extra seconds may not matter. But when AI is embedded into customer service, coding, search, data analysis or autonomous workflows, latency can directly affect productivity and operating costs. Faster models allow users and agents to complete more interactions within the same period, making speed a measurable part of the value delivered by the system.
The shift also changes the economics of AI. Companies don't necessarily need the most powerful model for every task; they need a model that provides sufficient intelligence at the right speed and cost. This connects with the growing model-routing market, where systems dynamically select different models depending on the complexity of a request. As inference becomes cheaper and faster, AI can move into workflows where waiting for a response previously made automation impractical.
The larger takeaway is that AI competition is moving from “smarter models” toward optimized intelligence. Capability, latency, price and reliability increasingly have to be considered together. For enterprises, the best AI may therefore not be the model that produces the most sophisticated answer, but the one that delivers a sufficiently good answer fast enough to keep the entire workflow moving. In an agentic economy, milliseconds and seconds can translate directly into productivity, making speed an increasingly valuable component of AI's commercial proposition.
