Stormgate Servers Go Dark Following AI-Focused Hosting Shift

The real-time strategy game Stormgate is set to lose its online multiplayer functionality at the end of April after its server infrastructure partner, Hathora, was acquired by an AI company, Fireworks AI. According to TechSpot, this acquisition has led to the shutdown of Hathora’s gaming services as its infrastructure is being redirected toward AI inference workloads. As a result, Frost Giant Studios confirmed that multiplayer servers will go offline, making Stormgate one of the first major gaming casualties of AI-driven cloud resource shifts.

The developers stated that the game will still remain playable through an offline patch, ensuring that single-player and local features continue to work. However, all online modes, including multiplayer matchmaking, will become unavailable unless the studio secures a new server partner in the future. Frost Giant expressed hope that online support may eventually return, but for now, the transition highlights the growing dependence of modern games on third-party cloud infrastructure.

This development also reflects a broader trend in the technology industry, where AI workloads are increasingly competing with gaming for the same backend resources. Until now, most discussion around AI’s impact on gaming has focused on graphics cards, chips, and hardware supply. This case expands the concern to include server orchestration and cloud hosting, showing how AI expansion can directly disrupt live-service and multiplayer gaming ecosystems.

Overall, the Stormgate incident demonstrates how the rapid growth of AI infrastructure is beginning to reshape adjacent industries, including gaming. It raises important questions about the long-term sustainability of outsourced server services and whether more studios may face similar risks if hosting providers shift toward more profitable AI operations.
