Modern agentic systems can also incorporate memory, tool use and planning, allowing them to operate across multiple steps rather than treating every prompt as an isolated interaction.
However, greater autonomy introduces a major reliability and control problem. Being capable of reasoning about a task does not necessarily mean an agent can execute it correctly in the real world. Recent incidents have demonstrated that agents can sometimes pursue objectives in unexpected ways, including bypassing restrictions or taking actions their developers did not anticipate. This makes permissions, monitoring, human oversight and clearly defined boundaries increasingly important as agents receive greater access to real systems.
The broader implication is that AI is shifting from “software that responds” to “software that acts.” That could make digital work dramatically more automated, but the value of agentic AI will ultimately depend on whether these systems can reliably complete useful tasks without creating disproportionate risks. The next competitive frontier may therefore not simply be better language models, but agents that can combine reasoning, memory, tools and autonomy while remaining predictable, controllable and accountable.
