UNESCO Peru is participating for the first time in the 2026 Lima International Book Fair (FIL Lima), using the event as a platform to encourage public discussions about the ethical development and governance of artificial intelligence. Through its series titled “The Ethical Horizons of Artificial Intelligence: Technology at the Service of People,” UNESCO aims to raise awareness about how AI can benefit society while respecting human rights and democratic values.
The program features two panel discussions bringing together experts in technology, law, and public policy to examine both the opportunities and the challenges of AI. Topics include transparency, accountability, legal frameworks, and governance mechanisms needed to ensure AI systems are developed and deployed responsibly. The discussions are designed to promote informed public dialogue and encourage ethical decision-making in the digital age.
One of the sessions includes an interview between UNESCO Peru Technical Coordinator Astrid Arbildo and technology regulation specialist Dilmar Villena. Their conversation focuses on building AI systems that are transparent, inclusive, responsible, and fully aligned with human rights. The event also highlights the importance of collaboration among governments, academia, civil society, and the private sector to establish effective AI governance.
Beyond artificial intelligence, UNESCO Peru's participation at FIL Lima 2026 also includes activities dedicated to preserving and revitalizing Indigenous languages, demonstrating the organization's commitment to combining technological innovation with cultural diversity and social inclusion. By bringing together conversations on AI ethics and cultural heritage, UNESCO emphasizes that technological progress should always serve people, protect human dignity, and promote sustainable development.
