UNESCO, in partnership with the Educational and Cultural Coordination of the Central American Integration System (CECC/SICA), has released a new regional assessment examining how artificial intelligence is transforming the cultural and creative industries across Central America. The report explores the adoption of AI tools, their impact on content creation, production, and distribution, and the governance challenges facing artists, cultural institutions, and policymakers in the region. It aims to provide a roadmap for responsible AI adoption while preserving cultural diversity.
The assessment finds that AI is increasingly being used across creative sectors to enhance productivity, support artistic workflows, and improve access to cultural content. However, it also identifies significant challenges, including limited technical expertise, unequal access to AI technologies, concerns over intellectual property rights, and the potential erosion of local cultural identities. The report emphasizes the need for greater investment in digital skills and specialized training to ensure creators can benefit from AI without being disadvantaged.
UNESCO also highlights the importance of developing governance frameworks that promote the ethical use of AI while protecting creators' rights and cultural heritage.
