US Navy Tests AI-Powered Sonar to Hunt Submarines at RIMPAC 2026

The U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin demonstrated an AI-powered sonar system called SensorMAX during the RIMPAC 2026 naval exercise near Hawaii. The system was installed on modified MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and is designed to help crews detect and identify underwater threats by continuously analyzing acoustic information from sonobuoys.

SensorMAX essentially acts as an AI acoustic assistant for anti-submarine warfare. It can process spectral-energy information from as many as eight subsurface sonobuoy feeds simultaneously—twice the capacity of the legacy system described in the report. Instead of requiring human operators to continuously examine every stream of sonar information, the AI monitors the data and flags potentially significant acoustic signatures for the crew.

One of the more notable capabilities is the system's ability to learn during an operation. When an acoustic signature cannot be confidently classified, operators can send the information to a ground station for analysis. Lockheed Martin says the resulting model can then be retrained in less than five minutes and transmitted back to the helicopter through an encrypted data link. This means the system can potentially adapt to unfamiliar underwater sounds without waiting for the aircraft to return to base.

The larger significance is that AI could gradually change how anti-submarine warfare is conducted. For now, SensorMAX is described as a co-pilot that assists human crews rather than replacing them. But continuously processing multiple sensor feeds, identifying unusual signals and rapidly incorporating new information are capabilities that could eventually support much greater levels of automation. The RIMPAC demonstration therefore represents another example of militaries moving AI from experimental software toward real-time decision support in complex operational environments, while keeping humans involved in the loop.
