The government argues that the restructuring will improve coordination by embedding science and innovation across all areas of economic policy. Under the new structure, AI policy has been elevated to the Cabinet Office with a dedicated cabinet-level AI minister, while business, trade, and research portfolios have been brought together to accelerate commercialization of scientific discoveries and strengthen links between research and industry.
Despite these assurances, many experts believe the long-term impact will depend on whether research continues to receive sustained political attention and funding. They warn that maintaining the UK's global leadership in science will require stable governance, consistent investment, and clear strategic priorities, regardless of which government department oversees the nation's research agenda.
