White House AI Chief Calls Artificial Intelligence a ‘Magical Technology’

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director and AI adviser Michael Kratsios described artificial intelligence as a “magical technology” while emphasizing that its benefits can only be fully realized if it becomes accessible and understandable to ordinary people, especially students. Speaking at the Presidential AI Challenge National Champion Awards Ceremony at the White House, Kratsios stressed that AI should not remain an exclusive tool for technical experts but should be available to learners from all backgrounds.

A key theme of his remarks was the importance of demystifying AI. Kratsios noted that the Presidential AI Challenge encouraged students—not just those focused on science and mathematics—to use AI creatively to address real-world problems. He argued that broad participation in AI innovation is essential for ensuring that future generations can effectively leverage emerging technologies and contribute to technological progress.

The article also highlights the U.S. government's growing focus on AI education. Kratsios linked the initiative to a 2025 executive order that established the AI Education Task Force and launched the Presidential AI Challenge. According to him, the program attracted tens of thousands of students who submitted more than 2,500 AI-powered projects designed to tackle local and national challenges, demonstrating strong interest in AI learning among young people.

The article concludes that expanding AI literacy has become a strategic priority for the United States. By encouraging students to engage with AI early and apply it to practical problems, policymakers hope to develop a workforce capable of thriving in an increasingly AI-driven economy. Kratsios emphasized that making AI accessible to all students is crucial for ensuring that the technology's opportunities are widely shared rather than concentrated among a small group of specialists.
