Enterprise software company plans to continue aggressively expanding its workforce in India while increasing investments in artificial intelligence, according to Workday India president Sunil Jose. The company has more than doubled its India headcount over the past 12 to 14 months to around 1,300 employees and is preparing to expand operations further with planned offices in Delhi and Bengaluru.
Jose said India remains highly attractive for global technology companies because of its large skilled workforce, lower operating costs, and growing capability to support advanced engineering, finance, and AI-related roles. Workday currently serves more than 1,800 customers in India out of its 11,500 global clients, which include companies such as Netflix, Nvidia, and Target.
A major focus of Workday’s strategy is expanding AI integration across both internal operations and customer-facing products. Jose explained that clients are increasingly deploying Workday’s AI agents in payroll, recruitment, finance, and expense-management systems to automate repetitive processes. According to the company, one retailer using Workday’s AI tools reduced hiring times by nearly 70%, while many businesses are now automating tasks that previously consumed significant employee time.
The announcement comes amid broader changes across India’s technology sector as multinational companies rapidly increase hiring for AI and data-related roles. Analysts say India is becoming one of the world’s most important AI talent hubs, even as automation creates concerns about long-term impacts on traditional software and outsourcing jobs. Workday’s expansion reflects the growing belief among global enterprise firms that India will play a central role in the next phase of AI-driven business transformation.
