40% of Agentic AI Projects Expected to End by 2027, Says Gartner

Over 40% of agentic AI projects are expected to be canceled by the end of 2027 due to escalating costs, unclear business value, or inadequate risk controls, according to Gartner. Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that can autonomously make decisions and take actions. Deploying AI agents at scale can be complex and costly, and many agentic AI propositions lack significant value or return on investment.

Insufficient security measures can also hinder project success. Currently, 19% of organizations have made significant investments in agentic AI, while 42% have made conservative investments. However, 8% have no investments, and 31% are in a wait-and-watch mode or are unsure.

Gartner predicts that at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI by 2028. Additionally, 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI by 2028. To avoid cancellation, Gartner recommends pursuing agentic AI only where it delivers clear value or ROI.
