Africa's artificial intelligence ambitions and digital future are taking center stage globally, driven by major initiatives announced at the Unstoppable Africa 2025 event in New York. Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa revealed plans to establish Africa's first network of AI factories, powered by NVIDIA GPUs, set to be completed by the end of 2026. This initiative aims to accelerate Africa's participation in the global AI economy and promote homegrown innovation.
The AI factories will enable Africa's stakeholders to develop local AI solutions addressing pressing challenges and drive economic transformation. Meta signaled upcoming investment opportunities in Africa's digital ecosystem, highlighting confidence in the continent's growing tech and AI potential. Kojo Boakye, Vice President and Public Policy Director for Africa, Middle East & Turkey, presented the announcement.
The Global Africa Business Initiative launched two new GABI Action Pathways focused on digital transformation and healthcare. The Digital Transformation Action Pathway will upgrade government services, expand internet access and digital infrastructure, train people for future jobs, help small businesses with tech and funding, and promote responsible use of AI and data. The Healthcare Action Pathway will improve access to medical services through digital tools, build stronger regional supply chains, attract investment, and support the growth of Africa's healthcare workforce.
These initiatives reflect a shift toward locally led solutions and long-term planning, focusing on robust systems, adoption of advanced technologies, and capital investment to drive regional integration and global competitiveness.
