AGI explained: What it is and how it differs from AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to machines designed to perform specific tasks that mimic human intelligence, such as language translation, image recognition, or answering questions. Most AI systems today are considered narrow AI, meaning they are trained for particular functions and operate within defined limits. They can be highly powerful, but they cannot think, learn, or adapt beyond their programmed scope.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), on the other hand, is a more advanced and largely theoretical concept. AGI would be capable of human-like intelligence across a wide range of tasks, meaning it could understand, learn, and apply knowledge in different domains without needing retraining. In simple terms, while current AI is like a specialist, AGI would be like a generalist human mind that can handle anything from science to art to decision-making.

The key difference lies in flexibility and reasoning ability. AI systems today rely on patterns in data and are limited to specific use cases, whereas AGI would be able to reason, adapt, and solve new problems independently. It could transfer knowledge from one field to another, something current AI struggles with. This ability to generalize and think abstractly is what makes AGI a major goal in AI research.

However, AGI has not been fully achieved yet and remains a subject of debate among experts. While it promises transformative benefits—like accelerating scientific discovery—it also raises concerns about control and safety if machines reach or surpass human-level intelligence. Overall, AGI represents the next big leap beyond today’s AI, moving from task-specific tools to systems that could think and learn much like humans.
