AI ‘Brain Fry’: Why Too Much AI at Work May Be Exhausting People

A growing concern in workplaces is a phenomenon known as “AI brain fry,” a type of mental fatigue caused by excessive use and supervision of artificial intelligence tools. The concept was highlighted in a discussion referenced in CNN’s Nightcap newsletter, which examined how the rapid adoption of AI is affecting workers’ mental workload. Instead of simply making jobs easier, constantly interacting with and monitoring AI systems can overwhelm employees who must manage multiple tools and outputs at once.

The idea comes from research discussed in the Harvard Business Review, which surveyed about 1,488 full-time workers in the United States. Around 14% of respondents reported experiencing AI brain fry, defined as mental exhaustion from using or overseeing AI systems beyond one’s cognitive capacity. Employees often described symptoms such as headaches, mental fog, difficulty concentrating, and slower decision-making.

One key cause is the oversight required for AI tools. While AI can automate tasks, workers still need to check outputs, correct mistakes, and coordinate between several systems at once. Researchers found that employees who had to supervise AI heavily used 14% more mental effort and experienced 12% more fatigue compared with those who used AI less intensively.

Experts say AI brain fry does not mean AI is harmful overall, but it shows that how companies deploy AI matters. When AI is used to eliminate repetitive tasks, it can reduce burnout. However, when workers must constantly manage multiple AI tools, it may create information overload and increase errors. As businesses adopt AI more widely, researchers suggest designing workflows that balance automation with human capacity to avoid cognitive overload.
