AI Coding Tools Boost Developer Productivity, Study Finds

A recent study by Jellyfish found that nearly 90% of engineering teams are now using AI coding tools to boost productivity. According to the 2025 State of Engineering Management report, six out of ten respondents reported at least a 25% increase in developer velocity and productivity due to AI coding tools. Only a small fraction, fewer than 1%, feel that AI is causing delays or inefficiencies.

The study highlights the benefits of AI coding tools, including faster coding, improved code quality, and increased job satisfaction. AI automates tedious tasks like code completion, testing, and debugging, allowing developers to focus on more complex and creative work. Studies suggest productivity gains of up to 55% with tools like GitHub Copilot.

The adoption of AI coding tools has been widespread, with almost 90% of engineering teams using these tools, a significant jump from 61% last year. Additionally, 61% of respondents reported an increase in engineering budgets as a percentage of company revenue from 2024 to 2025.

Looking ahead, over 80% of respondents expect AI to handle a growing share of software development tasks within five years. A hybrid model of humans and AI is expected to become more prevalent, with AI augmenting human creativity rather than replacing developers. The study suggests that AI coding tools will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the future of software development.
