Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in India’s development agenda, helping boost governance, public service delivery and citizen-centric outcomes, according to a government report shared at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Officials highlighted how AI technologies are now being used to improve decision-making, enhance efficiency across government departments, and deliver key services more effectively to the public.
In areas such as healthcare, AI-driven diagnostics and predictive analytics are being integrated to support early disease detection, resource planning, and more personalised care pathways. Government speakers also pointed to uses in agriculture, where machine learning models help forecast weather impacts, optimise crop planning, and support farmers with targeted insights — improving yields and economic outcomes for rural communities.
AI is also shaping governance functions by streamlining administrative workflows, detecting anomalies in data to prevent fraud, and making public services more accessible and responsive. For example, several state and central agencies are deploying AI systems to analyse citizen feedback, reduce turnaround times for decisions, and offer automated support for common queries — all geared toward strengthening trust and accountability in public systems.
Officials at the summit underscored that ethical and responsible AI deployment remains a priority. India’s approach includes developing governance frameworks, promoting data protection, and ensuring AI tools are transparent, inclusive and aligned with societal values — with the goal of using AI not just for innovation, but to amplify equitable socio-economic development across the country.
