AI Isn’t Reducing Workloads — It’s Straining Employees Instead

A new analysis suggests that artificial intelligence is not making work easier for many employees, despite promises of greater productivity. Instead of reducing workloads, AI tools appear to be increasing the number of tasks workers handle each day. Researchers studying workplace activity found that employees often use AI to accelerate work, but the time saved is quickly filled with additional responsibilities and communication demands.

One striking finding from the research is that time spent on email and messaging has more than doubled after AI tools were introduced. Workers are generating more drafts, updates, and internal communications, which increases the volume of digital interactions throughout the workday. At the same time, employees are spending significantly more time switching between tasks and monitoring automated outputs produced by AI systems.

The increased communication and multitasking come at a cost. Studies show that deep-focus work sessions—periods of uninterrupted concentration—have dropped by about 9% among employees using AI tools. This decline in focused work can reduce creativity and complex problem-solving, which are often the most valuable aspects of knowledge-based jobs. Researchers warn that constant task switching and information overload can also lead to mental fatigue.

Experts describe this phenomenon as a “productivity paradox.” While AI can make individuals more efficient at completing tasks, organizations often respond by assigning more work rather than reducing hours. As a result, employees may feel busier and more overwhelmed than before, raising concerns that the rapid adoption of AI could contribute to workplace stress and burnout if companies fail to redesign workflows around the technology.
