AI Reaches Supreme Court: System to Handle Case Listing and Bench Allocation

India’s Supreme Court of India is preparing to introduce an artificial intelligence–based system to manage administrative tasks such as case listings and the allocation of cases to judicial benches. The initiative aims to modernize court operations and reduce the level of manual intervention currently required in handling these processes.

The proposed system would help automate how cases are scheduled and distributed among different benches of judges. At present, this administrative work is largely handled manually through the court’s registry and the office responsible for managing the roster of cases. The AI tool is expected to streamline these procedures and improve efficiency in the court’s functioning.

The move reportedly follows an internal review that highlighted structural and operational challenges in the court’s registry system. By introducing AI, officials hope to reduce delays and improve the transparency and consistency of case management, which is a critical issue in India’s judicial system due to the large backlog of cases.

The initiative has been approved by Justice Surya Kant, who currently heads the court’s administration. If implemented successfully, the system could represent a major technological shift in how the Supreme Court handles its administrative workload, though judges will still retain authority over judicial decisions and the functioning of the court.
