AI Security Officials Test Anthropic Cyber Threat as Bank of England to Convene Chiefs

UK officials have raised fresh concerns over the cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic’s powerful new AI model, Claude Mythos. According to the report, the model has been described by AI minister Kanishka Narayan as the most capable system yet tested for cyber evaluation, after being assessed by the government-backed AI Security Institute. The model was reportedly withheld from broad release because of its ability to uncover hidden software flaws and potentially enable sophisticated cyberattacks.

The Bank of England, along with the UK Treasury, Financial Conduct Authority, and National Cyber Security Centre, is set to convene senior finance officials next week to assess the threat to the financial sector. The concern is that AI systems like Mythos can simulate corporate networks, identify vulnerabilities, and complete advanced “cyber-range” tests more effectively than previous models. This has intensified fears that banks and other critical institutions may face a new generation of AI-assisted cyber risks.

The meeting follows similar emergency discussions already held in the United States, where major Wall Street banking executives were reportedly summoned to discuss the same model’s risks. This highlights how concerns over AI-driven cybersecurity threats are now spreading across major global financial systems, prompting coordination between governments, regulators, and private institutions.

Beyond the immediate banking concerns, the issue reflects a broader shift in how governments are approaching AI safety and national resilience. Rather than focusing only on innovation, policymakers are increasingly prioritizing the defensive use of advanced AI to protect critical infrastructure. The upcoming Bank of England meeting signals that AI cybersecurity has now become a major strategic issue for financial stability and public-sector preparedness.
