AI Slop is on the Rise: What Does it Mean for How We Use the Internet?

The internet is facing a growing problem: AI slop. This term refers to low-quality content created using artificial intelligence tools, often with little regard for accuracy. AI slop can take many forms, including images, videos, audio, and text, and is frequently used to exploit the economics of attention on the internet. In essence, AI slop is the online equivalent of noise, displacing higher-quality material that could be more helpful.

One notable example of AI slop is the proliferation of fantastical images, such as "Shrimp Jesus," or believable images like a little girl clutching a puppy in a boat during a flood that went viral during Hurricane Helene. These images can spread quickly, often without being fact-checked or verified. Similarly, AI-generated music has become a concern, with bands like "The Velvet Sundown" appearing on streaming services with creative backstories and derivative tracks.

The issue of AI slop extends to writing as well. Science fiction magazines like Clarkesworld have stopped taking new submissions due to the flood of AI-generated writing. On YouTube, AI-generated content has become increasingly prevalent, with nine out of the top 100 fastest-growing YouTube channels featuring AI-generated content like zombie football and cat soap operas.

The harm caused by AI slop is multifaceted. It can spread misinformation, even if it's apparent that the content is AI-generated. Additionally, AI slop can cause job and financial losses for artists and creators by crowding out their content. Perhaps most concerning is the degradation of the online media environment, making it harder to find high-quality content.

To combat AI slop, users can take steps to flag content that's harmful or problematic, report it, or add community notes to provide context. By being vigilant and proactive, we can work towards maintaining the integrity of the online environment and ensuring that high-quality content is accessible to all.
