AI Won’t Destroy the Software Industry, Says Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently pushed back against growing investor fears that artificial intelligence will wipe out the traditional software industry. Speaking in the wake of Nvidia’s strong quarterly earnings, Huang said the idea that AI will destroy or make enterprise software companies obsolete is a misunderstanding of how AI and software will interact in the future. Instead, he argued that markets have “got it wrong” by assuming AI will replace existing software tools rather than build on them.

Huang told CNBC that what many see as a threat from “agentic” AI — systems that can perform tasks independently — is actually an opportunity for software firms to integrate these capabilities into their platforms. He said that software tools such as enterprise platforms, databases, and business systems will continue to play a central role because they already serve essential functions across industries. According to Huang, AI agents will rely on these tools to complete work more efficiently rather than supplant them.

A central point Huang made is that AI will become a tool user rather than a tool replacer. He drew parallels to familiar software like browsers and productivity applications, saying these tools exist for fundamental reasons and that AI will work with them — not eliminate them. This means software companies could actually benefit from the era of AI by enhancing their offerings and productivity rather than seeing their value eroded.

Despite these reassurances, the broader tech market has seen significant pressure on software stocks amid concerns about AI disruption. Yet, Huang’s perspective — that AI will augment rather than annihilate the software ecosystem — reflects an industry view that future innovation will involve collaboration between intelligent systems and existing digital infrastructure, preserving software’s role as a backbone of modern technology.
