Artificial Intelligence in India: A Growing Ecosystem

India is experiencing a significant surge in artificial intelligence (AI) development, driven by government initiatives and investments. The IndiaAI Mission, launched in March 2024, has been allocated ₹10,371.92 crore (approximately $1.2 billion) to promote AI development and adoption across various sectors.

The mission aims to create a conducive ecosystem for AI innovation, with a focus on developing native AI solutions tailored to the Indian context. This includes the development of multilingual and multimodal large language models, such as the Bharat GPT program, which will support 22 Indian languages. The government has also established several centers of excellence, including the AI Centers of Excellence in New Delhi, focusing on agriculture, sustainable cities, and healthcare.

India's AI landscape is witnessing significant advancements, including the launch of AI-powered platforms like Krishi 24/7, an automated agricultural news monitoring and analysis tool. The country is also home to various AI startups, such as KissanAI, which has developed Dhenu 1.0, an agriculture-specific large language model designed for Indian farmers.

The government has taken several initiatives to promote AI adoption, including the IndiaAI Innovation Challenge, which encourages startups to develop AI solutions for healthcare, agriculture, governance, and more. Additionally, the government has launched the AI Competency Framework, aimed at upskilling public sector professionals in AI.
